Welcome to the world of comfortable text editing! ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ We, at Zirkonics Corp., thank you for giving us an opportunity to improve your text editing environment. It is our firm belief that once you have configured PTE to your needs, you will want no other editor. In this file you will find a description of what the PTE distribution disk contains and what it does not. Changes & Additions ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ One change you should note is that the configuration that the manual professes to be in PTE.Def is actually found in Manual.Def. If you want to follow the manual and try these keys you should double-click the Manual icon in the PTE/Icons directory or select the Manual configuration in the Misc. menus. The rest of the changes/additions to the PTE Manual are found in a file PTE/Docs/Addendum. All PTE help files assume that you have PTEFont in your fonts: if you have trouble understanding what this means, then you should boot your Amiga with the PTE disk and the fonts will be where PTE expects them. Note that in order to be able to fit all of the PTE files on one disk it was necessary to remove some of the standard Workbench files. The deleted files are: Clock Demos directory Expansion directory System/Format System/GraphicDump System/IconEd System/Say Utilities/Calculator Utilities/NotePad c/DiskDoctor c/Ed c/Edit c/Search c/Sort System/Setmap devs/narrator.device libs/translator.library PTE & Files ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Professional Text Engine and related files are all found in the PTE directory. It contains the following: PTE - Professional Text Engine editor ReadMe - the file you are now reading Icons - DIRECTORY of sample project icons Defs - DIRECTORY of editor configurations Docs - DIRECTORY of Help and Documentation files. PTEEmpty - an empty directory for your use. Icons Directory ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ In the Icons directory you will find a sample of the icons that you can assign to different types of text files. The TOOL TYPES information in these icons has been defined to start PTE with an appropriate configuration when that icon is opened or double clicked. Also, when you start up PTE via one of the PROJECT icons, PTE will create an icon for every file that is saved. Defs Directory ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ In the Defs directory you will find PTE configuration files that are provided for you. These files are include for applications in technical and creative writing, C and Assembly language programming. Users who are familiar with MicroPro's WordStar will find the WS.Def configuration easy to use, since it emulates many of WordStar's commands. To start up PTE in any given configuration it is only necessary to double-click the icon of interest in the Icons directory. For example, to have PTE come up with the technical/creative writing configuration, double-click the Doc icon. Similarly, to have PTE come up with the WordStar like commands, double-click the WSDoc icon. Once you are in PTE you can select any one of the available configurations by choosing it in the Configurat'n item in the Misc. menu. Defs/Examples ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ In the Defs/Examples directory you will find an expanded version of the more complicated definitions that are used in one or more of the configuration files. If you are interested in writing macro definitions you may want to take a look at these to get you started. Docs Directory ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ The Docs directory contains the documentation, and help files for the definitions provided in the Defs directory. This directory also contains an addendum to the first edition of the manual. Descriptions for workbench support, print command, end of line strings, new functions and features, are found only in the PTE/Docs/Addendum file. General Purpose PTE Configuration ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ A general purpose configuration that is used as a base for the other definitions is given in the PTE.Def file. This configuration is used when PTE is loaded by double clicking any Def or ReadMe project icon. A description of commands and keys can be obtained by pressing the HELP key. A more detailed description of the macro definitions can be found in the PTE/Docs/PTEDoc file. Running with 512k ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Since PTE is a memory resident editor, it requires that all files being edited fit into the available memory. This may strain your system's memory requirements if you only have 512k. When working with PTE you should close all CLI windows before executing the DIRECTORY command, otherwise you will get a lot of "RAM: disk full" requesters. You may also get these while saving files, you can ignore them safely, it is only the STATE file being saved to RAM:. Remember to read the Addendum file, in the PTE/Docs directory, to get information on new commands, functions, and features. We thank you for choosing Professional Text Engine as your text editing tool. We believe that you WILL NOT be disappointed.
